Mac keyboard tester

Press every key on your Mac keyboard to check that each one registers. Keys light up while you press them and stay marked once they work, so a dead key stands out. It also shows the key, code and keyCode the browser receives.

Press every key. Blue means the key works. Grey keys like fn and Touch ID never reach a browser, and some ⌘ shortcuts stay with macOS.

How to test a Mac keyboard

  1. Close other apps so no shortcut takes over.
  2. Press every key once, left to right, row by row.
  3. Hold Shift, Option, Control and Command on each side; they report left and right separately.
  4. Look for keys that stay white, or stay lit after you let go.

When a key doesn't work

  • Restart the Mac, then test again.
  • For a Bluetooth keyboard, check the battery and re-pair it in System Settings › Bluetooth.
  • Check System Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard: Slow Keys and Sticky Keys change how keys respond.
  • Blow out crumbs at an angle, with the keyboard tilted.
  • If it's still dead, Apple or an authorized service provider can check it.

questions

How do I test my Mac keyboard?

Open this page and press every key once. Each key turns blue when your Mac reports it. A key that stays white when pressed isn't registering; one that stays lit after you let go may be sticking.

Why don't fn and Touch ID light up?

macOS handles the fn (Globe) key, Touch ID and the brightness and media functions itself, so they never reach a web page. That doesn't mean they're broken.

Why do some ⌘ shortcuts do something else?

macOS and the browser keep some Command shortcuts, like ⌘Tab, ⌘Q and ⌘W, for themselves. Press ⌘ on its own to test the key.

Does it work with external keyboards?

Yes. Any keyboard connected to the Mac works, including Magic Keyboard and mechanical keyboards. Windows keyboards report the Windows key as ⌘ and Alt as ⌥.
