Hours between two times

To find the time between two times, subtract the start from the end. 9:15 AM to 5:45 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes. If the end is earlier than the start, the time crossed midnight, so add 24 hours: 10 PM to 6 AM is 8 hours.

How to work out the time between two times by hand

  1. Write both times in 24-hour form: 2:20 PM is 14:20.
  2. Subtract the minutes. If the end minutes are smaller, borrow an hour: 60 minutes.
  3. Subtract the hours. If the end is earlier than the start, add 24 hours to it first.

Example: 08:45 to 14:20. Borrow an hour, so it's 13:80 − 08:45, which is 5 hours 35 minutes. For a whole week of shifts, use the time card calculator.

questions

How do I calculate the hours between two times?

Convert both to 24-hour time, subtract the start from the end, and borrow 60 minutes when the minutes go negative. 17:10 − 08:45 is 16:70 − 08:45, which is 8 hours 25 minutes.

What if the time period crosses midnight?

Add 24 hours to the end time first. 22:30 to 06:15 becomes 22:30 to 30:15, which is 7 hours 45 minutes.

How do I subtract a lunch break?

Work out the total time, then take off the break. 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours. Enter the break in the calculator and it does this for you.

How do I write the result as a decimal?

Divide the minutes by 60. 8 hours 25 minutes is 8 + 25 ÷ 60 = 8.42 hours. The calculator shows both.
