How Claude usage limits work
Every Claude plan uses a rolling five-hour session window. Your first message opens it, and it resets five hours later. Paid plans add a weekly limit across all models that resets at a fixed day and time for your account. Claude Code and the Claude apps share the same limits.
| Plan | Price | Usage per session |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20/month | Pro's per-session usage |
| Max 5x | $100/month | 5× Pro per session |
| Max 20x | $200/month | 20× Pro per session |

Codex limits on ChatGPT
| Plan | Price | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20/month | 5-hour window and weekly |
| Pro | from $100/month | Weekly; no 5-hour limit |
Neither company publishes a fixed number of messages. It depends on the model, the size of the task and whether it runs locally or in the cloud.
Getting more out of a session
- Start a new conversation for a new task, so you aren't paying for old context.
- Use a smaller model for simple edits and save the biggest for hard problems.
- Plan the session around the reset: start a long task right after a window opens.
